Batik uses layers of wax and dye to produce designs on fabric. Learn how to prepare your silk scarf, apply wax-resist, paint with dye and finish your scarf. Leave with a beautiful one-of-a-kind scarf. Additional $20 material fee. Ages 16+

    Four 3-hour classes. Actor and filmmaker Robert X. Golphin will guide participants in learning about storytelling, performance, lighting, cinematography, and sound. Sessions will include theoretical discussions, film clips/visual aids, and technical practice all resulting in the production of at least one collaborative 5-10 minute short film. All participants will gain hands-on experience in acting on camera, operating the camera, lights and sound, and directing actors. This course aims to expose participants to new ways of learning, and help them create and embrace their artistic abilities, and strengthen their creative, interpersonal and intrapersonal communication skills.   1. Vespertine Domesticity: Lighting of the Industrial Age (Pt. 1)

    This two-part lecture focuses on the history of artificial illumination within the home and civic buildings. The first focuses on lighting technologies and the interiors they brightened before the Industrial Revolution. Special attention will be placed on those novel lighting techniques that were retained for use during Rockwood’s early years, followed by a discussion of ways that they can be returned to dramatize those interiors today. The second focuses on post-Industrial Revolutionlighting. Special attention will be placed on the artforms that emerged in response to new lighting opportunities, followed by a discussion of ways that they can be better represented in Rockwoodnow.
