The Canine Unit started in 1986 with one officer and a bloodhound named "Jesse". Today, there are eleven teams engaged in search and patrol work. Five of these teams are also trained in explosives detection. Training takes twelve to twenty-one weeks with each dog cross-trained to perform searches for contraband, missing persons, and routine patrol work. Each patrol squad has a K-9 team assigned to it. The Canine Unit has its share of heroes, "Nero" being one. He saved his handler's life by knocking a gun out of the hand of a robbery suspect. After ten years on the force, "Nero" was forced to retire with a record of seizing over 1 million dollars in drugs, cash and property and earning numerous commendations for merit and valor. |
