New Castle County’s Inaugural Prom Dress Giveaway Set for this Weekend

New Castle, DE – This Friday and Saturday, New Castle County will present 1,000 prom dresses to area high school students free of charge through its inaugural ‘Prom’iere’ giveaway. Over the winter months, county libraries accepted donations of new and gently used dry-cleaned dresses from community members and local dress shops and businesses. Their generous gifts will help young women who might be unable to purchase prom dresses to participate in their schools’ upcoming festivities.

“No young person should miss their high school prom because they are unable to afford the expense,” County Executive Matthew Meyer said. “We are grateful for the overwhelming response from residents and businesses who answered our call to donate, and I applaud our staff members who worked to meet this need in our community through hard work and resourcefulness. I urge all young women who are worried about the significant financial burden of purchasing a prom dress to take advantage of this opportunity to select their dress at no cost.”

High School students can browse available dresses and make their selections this Friday, March 3 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Library (2020 West Ninth Street, Wilmington) and Saturday, March 4 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Garfield Park Community Recreation Center (26 Karlyn Drive, New Castle).

Gift certificates for services such as flowers, hair, and tuxedo rentals will be given away as raffle items.

All members of the community are welcome to attend without registration. All prom dresses on-site are free to students. A very limited number of tuxedos and suits have been donated and will also be available.
