COUNTY EXECUTIVE CHRIS COONS COMMEMORATES
WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
NEW CASTLE, Del. - County Executive Chris Coons recognized August 26, 2008 as the 68th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment. Women's Equality Day is an annual recognition of the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women's suffrage. Since that momentus day on August 26th, 1920, women have enjoyed the benefits of their civil rights efforts, and continue to strive towards absolute equality. The movements propelled by women during the early 1900's (and even earlier at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convension in 1848) have increased women's rights not only in the political realm but in the occupational and social realms as well. August 26th not only commemorates the achievements realized in 1920, but it recognizes the need for continued progress, to the point where gender is no longer a discriminatory factor that works against women.
